Zoom vs. Google Meet

As businesses and organizations are implementing work-from-home policies and individuals are using video calls to connect with friends and family, we are faced with the question, “Which video conferencing platform is best for me?”

There is a multitude of options available from FaceTime to Skype, WhatsApp, Blue Jeans, Go To Meeting and many others. In this article, I will look at two of the most popular options, Zoom and Google Meet, and compare their features.

Zoom

  • HD video and audio
  • Active speaker, gallery and mini views
  • Virtual backgrounds
  • Desktop and application sharing
  • Record meetings
  • Screen sharing
  • Meeting chat
  • Download software for desktop or phone for audio and video calls
  • Join with audio only by phone with teleconferencing number and code

PAID VERSION: Up to 100 participants, 24-hour meeting duration, user management, streaming to third parties via RTMP, additional admin features and reporting (begins at $14.99/month/host)

Google Meet

  • HD video and audio
  • Tiled, spotlight or sidebar views
  • Desktop and application sharing
  • Screen sharing
  • Meeting chat
  • Encrypted calls
  • No software needed for desktop viewing; download phone app
  • Join with audio only by phone with teleconferencing number and code

FREE VERSION: Up to 25 participants

PAID VERSION: Up to 250 participants, integration with Google applications, meetings recorded to Google Drive, live streaming up to 100,000 (included with GSuite beginning at $6.00/month/user)

I have used both of these platforms extensively and both have proven reliable and consistent. Google Meet is easy to use for those who are not familiar with video conferencing software. The ability to participate in a call without downloading software simplifies the joining process.

While Zoom offers specialized features and is becoming a popular option, they have received a lot of criticism for Zoombombing. The company has since enhanced its security options and provided steps to prevent unwanted intruders in your meeting.

It often comes down to a choice between features and price. What option meets your needs and budget? Whether you select Zoom, Google Meet, or another platform, I hope you enjoy the benefits of online meetings!
